Forsus™ & Herbst Appliances

Fixing overbites, no headgear required

When the upper teeth sit too far ahead of the lower teeth, a Forsus corrector or Herbst appliance gently guides the bite into better balance. Both work right alongside braces.

What is a Class II bite?

A Class II bite, often called an overbite, is when the upper jaw and teeth sit noticeably ahead of the lower ones. Beyond looks, it can affect how teeth wear, how you chew, and sometimes how your jaw feels.

The Forsus corrector

The Forsus is a small spring-loaded device that attaches to braces inside the cheeks. It applies gentle, steady pressure that helps move the upper teeth back and the lower teeth forward. It's usually added later in treatment, once braces are on.

The Herbst appliance

The Herbst uses small metal arms on each side of the mouth to hold the lower jaw in a forward position. For kids and teens who are still growing, that encourages the lower jaw to grow forward and catch up with the upper jaw. It's often used earlier in treatment, sometimes along with an expander or braces.

Why patients prefer them

  • No headgear to wear at home or at night
  • Nothing to remember to put in
  • Tucked inside the cheeks, so they're hard to see

Common questions

What's the difference between Forsus and Herbst?

Both fix overbites without headgear. A Herbst is usually used earlier, while the jaw is still growing, to help guide that growth. A Forsus attaches to braces, usually later in treatment, to move the bite into place. Dr. Croft will recommend the one that fits your child's growth and bite.

How long do they stay on?

Usually a matter of months, not years. Dr. Croft will let you know what to expect based on how much correction the bite needs.

Are they uncomfortable?

There's an adjustment period of a few days while the cheeks and jaw get used to it. After that, most patients barely notice it.

Can they be taken out?

No, and that's the point. Because they're fixed in place, they work around the clock without anyone having to remember to wear anything.
